This week’s brotherly match was going to happen at River Bend YMCA. The last time we played here was the first match of the season and I lost by 1. We were both fighting summer colds that we picked up at the beach the prior week. Seeing that he won the last match here, and we are both starting to play into season form, I tried to get him to put a wager on this match. This was more than picking restaurants or money, beard vs beard. Loser has to shave. He quickly lost his confidence and quickly backed out of this one.
The front 9 started slowly, mainly because I may of drank too much cold medicine before leaving the house, in preparation that this wasn’t just allergies. I finally woke up on the 4th hole and made par to Mr Wuf’s abysmal short game bogey. I would par the next hole which is par 3 and he would make bogey. Then make a stupid bogey on the par 5 because I took too aggressive of a line off the tee and landed in the water. He would make par to give me a 1 shot advantage after 7.
The 8th hole is the absolute worst designed golf hole I have ever seen. If you are short, there is a 50 foot drop off that the golf ball will roll down into deadmans land. I decided to try a new strategy this time. Take an extra club and fly it over the back of the green. I caught it a little thin. It hit a few paces behind the flag, released and finally rolled back down the hill leaving around 3 feet for birdie. I made the putt and Mr Wuf made a tricky putt for par. On the 9th, I do it again and hit it to 2 feet and make the putt. And he again has to work hard to make par. All I wanted for 8 holes was to finish 9, and call it a day and go home. But after making 2 birdies in a row, I had to finish. The first 9 scores was 38 to 41.
The back 9 was neck and neck. We were both 3 over after 16 holes. The 17th hole, Mr Wuf runs into trouble. He hits a good shot off the tee and leaves him about 100 yards over the water to the green. He proceeds to hit 2 balls short and into the water. He walks away with a 3 over par 7 to my par 4. The second 9 match would end with score of 39 to 44 in my advantage.
With Mr. Wuf being so quick to dismiss the beard match, I didn’t even get to tell him the entire thing. I was going to offer him 8 strokes that I had to win by. And with a final score of 77 to 85, I would of lost and had a freshly shaved face this week.
