Poor Mr. Wuf had no clue of the assault that was going to be unleashed on him this day. On a family vacation, we decided that we could get 2 rounds of golf in. We agreed that we both got to take a look at the course in Myrtle Beach and pick 1 each. Round #1 was Mr Wuf’s, and he picked the Myrtle Beach National West Course. This course is a fun short course. There is really no trouble to get into as you play. We started on hole #10 and was paired today with Corrections Mike. He proceeded to tell us that he was retired corrections offer from New York. Corrections Mike oddly couldn’t see where the ball went after it was about 5 feet away from where it was hit. Not sure if this is a skill that he developed ignoring inmates while working in prison. But made me scared thinking that this guy has a valid drivers license.
The match started after some heavy rain. I lost the ability to hit my driver, but this course from the tees we played was 6200 yards and wide open. So I got away with it on this day. My approach play and chipping and putting was on fire this day after the first 4 holes. On the par 3 18th hole, I hit a low blazing 6 iron 168 yards. It was 1 foot short of the flag. If it would of been dry, there is a great chance the ball would of rolled out and been a hole in one. Mr. Wuf had a horrible start. He had taken a few weeks off and just wasn’t able to knock the rust off. As we finish our first 9, I took a 10 shot lead.
The second 9, there was a new Mr. Wuf. He figured out how to hit his driver and was killing it 50 yards past me. He started applying the pressure. On the 3rd hole, after his drive, he had just over 50 yards in. He hit his next shot to about 6 feet. I had a 20 foot birdie putt that I missed. He made his. We would both par the next hole which was a par 3. The hardest hole on the course, par 4 5th hole. I hit a drive and leave 130 to the green. The flag is on the right hand side of the green. I hit a good shot but pull it to the right and miss the green by 5 feet. Again with a huge advantage off the tee, his goal is just to hit the middle of the green and force me to get up and down. He misaligns his shot and is on the very far left hand side. At my shot, just trying to hit is close. The hole has a slope behind it that funnels to the hole. I hit a perfect chip lands on the green and slowly starts trickling down to the hole. This is similar to the chip that Tiger hit to win the Masters where it seems like it takes forever, but the ball finally turns over and falls in the hole. I stole a birdie! Mr. Wuf had a very difficult putt and would 3 putt. He did have the shot of the day on the par 3 8th hole. It was 165 yards and he hit his shot about 5 feet behind the flag and the ball spun back. We couldn’t tell from the tee if he had a hole in one. Once we got up there it was inside a foot. It was definitely his best shot of the trip. The scores for this 9 were probably the tightest we have had in a while, that were great scores. I shot a 37 and he had an impressive 39.
Overall I would go on to shoot a 76 to his 88. He was not prepared for me to unleash this score on him. So far it is the low of the season, but we have 6 months to go to try and beat it.
