The Rubber Match

The end of March and beginning of April did not go as planned. I was sidelined due to bad weather and an infection I developed after a routine medical procedure. This past week I finally had medical clearance to swing and be active. I was able to get in 2 productive short game sessions working on chipping. I followed the principles that “The Short Game Chef” shares on his Instagram. I highly recommend watching through his videos. After having a health scare, I did decide it was time to lose weight. My goal is to walk 9 holes after work twice a week. The first round went phenomenal. I walked 3.3 miles on the front 9 at Rocky River shooting a 39 with 2 nonroutine birdies. The 2nd round, the wheels fell off. I made the walk, but all of a sudden my ball striking ability was gone.

This weeks match, with the devious Mr. Wuf, was played at Bryan Park’s Championship course. I’ll start with a quick review of the course. It was a very repetitive course that had some scenic holes mixed in with the same old same old. All the par 4’s were in the 400 yard range. There were 5 clubs I never had the opportunity to use. The match was uneventful. Surprisingly, we were not paired up on a Saturday after lunch. On the 7th hole, 155 yard par 3 I hit my shot to the middle of the green and he is short left but closest to the pin. He starts chirping that he would rather have his shot and he would beat me on this hole. I make the 30 foot down hill right to left foot putt for birdie and he changes his tone.

Standing on the 10th hole chowing down on our food we just picked up, I decided to spice up the match this week and have the winner of the back 9 picks the dinner spot on the way home. It’s incentive for both of us as I like a variety of things he doesn’t and Mr. Wuf thinks that McDonalds is good food. Unfortunately with the stakes being high, we never got it going. I was able to squeak out a win on the back 9 and overall match to make the 2023 record 2-1. After teasing him with either Thai food or Mexican restaurant, I let him off the hook and choose to get BBQ from Smithfield’s.

With my call weeks coming up at work for the next 2 weeks, I will be limited to only practice sessions. The goal for this time period will be to figure out what happened to my swing last week and fix it on the range. And to spend 1/2 of my practice time working on chipping and putting.
