Last weeks match was skipped due to my first golf trip of the year. I’ll have more to come on that in a later post. The weekly game with Mr. Wuf was back this weekend and the theme of this week was confidence. He had been going on for days he was going to be 2-0 after this week. This week was an almost quarterly voyage to Cleveland CC. While this course is generously carded as over 6400 yards from the very back tee box, it is very important to play your shots to the right spots. If not, the ball will be positioned awkwardly on the side of a hill calling for extreme precision.
On the drive over, Mr. Wuf is already declaring how he is going to be leading after the first hole. His prediction for how I would start: You’re going to miss it to the left on my first shot and hit it out of bounds across the street. Be short on my approach and make a double bogey to start. A little mind games on the ride over. Excellent gamesmanship! We get to the course 15 minutes ahead of our tee time. We normally arrive much earlier to loosen up, but this course for some reason doesn’t have a driving range. Upon checking in, we are informed that there is a group of 11 that is starting right after us. We will just call them The Band of Merry Thieves of Cleveland. We load up and get to the first tee, and the first 3 of this group is pressuring us to get out of their way. Playing with Mr. Wuf’s emotions, I decide to hit a draw for my first shot. The ball starts left like it’s going over across the road, but slowly curves back to the right and lands in the fairway. Unfortunately for him, I made a par on the hole, and he made the envisioned double bogey. Fast forward to the 6th hole now, the band of merry thieves of Cleveland strike. I hit pull my drive to the left and it gets through the tree line without hitting anything. We clearly see the ball sitting on the 5th hole. I make it over to where my ball is and poof it’s gone. T.B.o.M.T.o.C. is going nope never saw a ball over here. Are you sure it was there? Yes dude, I’ve got great vision and wearing new glasses. 100% saw it. I walk around looking some more, and all of a sudden a random ball rolls by around where my ball should have been at. I’m guessing a guilty concise from one of them. They are asking if that is mine, and I say nope. Are you sure? Yes I know what I hit. I order a custom ball with my initials on it.

Back to the match. After the first 9, 42 to 43 Mr. Wuf. Unfortunately they didn’t have any food ready when we passed by the clubhouse, so he got hangry until his candy bars kicked in. This allowed me to pounce in a giant momentum mover on the 10th hole. I made a 4 for a par and he made a 7. We pretty much matched scores for the rest of the day. He gained 3 shots back on 15 and 16. I told him he better stay hot because I will be making a birdie on 18 for a walk-off win. Holding true to my word, from 102 yards out, I hit a high towering perfect shot that landed 2 feet past the hole and spun back to a foot to the right of the hole. For the second 9, I was able to shoot a 38 to his 42. It was definitely a fun match, and hopefully many more like this where we both have good days.
